Hello Northern Lebanon Families! I’m excited to provide some insight about me, and the job of School Police Officer.

I joined the Northern Lebanon School District after working in public safety for over 30 years. In Lebanon County I have served as both a volunteer and paid firefighter, a 911 dispatcher, a municipal police officer (where I held the rank of Detective), a part-time School Police Officer working special events and as a municipal Emergency Management Coordinator. As a Detective, I was honored to be presented with the “Children’s Champion Award for Lebanon County” by the Children’s Resource Center.

I was born and raised in Lebanon County and my wife is a proud Viking alum. We currently live in the district with our two children who attend school here. As both an employee and parent, I am invested in the success of our district!

As the School Police Officer my primary purpose is to provide for the safety of everyone who comes to any event at Northern Lebanon. During a normal school day, I interact with the students in the hallways, assist the principals with investigations of misconduct or suspicious activity, work with the counselors to determine ways to help students who may need assistance, and monitor traffic and parking conditions. I coordinate the various fire and intruder drills mandated by the state, assist the Transportation Department with any incidents involving district vehicles, and work with the Registration Office to ensure that students are residing within our district. I lead the Safety and Security Committee, the Threat Assessment Teams and serve on the Safe2Say committee (which is a program to allow students to anonymously report problems or concerns).

Outside of the normal school day I work closely with Administration and the Athletic Department for special events (including sporting events, graduation, dances, and Board meetings), often behind the scenes to make sure that everyone is safe and the events go smoothly. I also act as a point of contact with the public safety agencies (fire, police, EMS, 911) who respond to our facilities. While I have the same powers of arrest as any police officer in Pennsylvania, my presence is never meant to create criminals of our students. According to NASRO, the three main roles of school resource officers are to be: an educator (i.e. guest lecturer), an informal counselor/mentor, and a law enforcement officer. These objectives fall in line with my personal beliefs that early intervention and rehabilitation using school resources can handle most of the issues with our students prior to the involvement of law enforcement.

As you can see, my title is School Police Officer, but it involves so much more! If you have questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me anytime via phone or email.

GO VIKINGS!
