Amaris Allan

Amaris (Miller) Allan graduated from NL in 2001. She has earned degrees from Gordon College in 2005, Regent College in 2006, and Sidney Kimmel Medical College (formerly Jefferson Medical College) in 2010. She worked for four years in inner-city Philadelphia at a faith-based community health center focused on the Latino population of North Philadelphia. She also lived in the (drug-struggling, low-employment, low-income) neighborhood and many of her patients were her neighbors, which she enjoyed. Currently, Allan lives and works in Tanzania, East Africa at a rural cottage hospital helping to deliver babies and take care of newborns in a setting where the maternal mortality rate is 22 times the US rate and the infant death rate is 11.5 times the US rate.
Allan currently resides in Tanzania with her husband, Stuart, and their young son and daughter. They are expecting their third child! Allan is raising her children to be bilingual by speaking only in Spanish with them. She attributes her bilingual abilities in large part to her Spanish classes at NL. She and her family are also working on their Swahili language skills during their time in Tanzania. Allan is passionate about music, God, reading, and learning. She enjoys trying new things (new foods, new places, new cultures, new languages, etc.) and having new adventures. The thing that Allan most appreciated about her time at NL was “the ability to form lifelong friendships, the ability to tailor my classes to what I was interested in and would use later, multiple advanced placement courses, and a great Spanish teacher!” The following is Allan’s advice for current NL students: Study hard but also make space in your life for forming great friendships and learning to be a good friend. A Northern Lebanon education gives you a solid foundation that you can take with you and build on wherever you want to go next, even if it's halfway across the world!
